On the job for 32 months at Texas, Charlie Strong has employed 17 assistant coaches. Five were fired. Three left. An original member of Mack Browns staff, Chambers coached running backs, including 1998 Heisman winner Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson, for five years, then worked with the tight ends for 11 seasons under Brown. He was the lone assistant retained by Strong in 2014, likely because of Chambers recruiting connections in the state.Before Texas: He was a receiver at North Texas and coached at Dallas Carter High School.After Texas: Fired after one season under Strong, Chambers works an administrator for the Arlington (Texas) Independent School District.Les Koenning, receivers Texas tenure: January 2014 to December 2014. He was fired with Chambers in the immediate aftermath of the Longhorns 31-7 loss to Arkansas in the Texas Bowl to conclude Strongs first year. In that 6-7 season, UT averaged 5.68 yards per pass attempt, 103rd nationally.Before Texas: Koenning came to UT after five seasons as the offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Mississippi State under Dan Mullen. He also served as coordinator for Dennis Franchione at Alabama and Texas A&M and worked as an assistant at Houston, TCU and with the Miami Dolphins, among other stops. Koenning played receiver at Texas for Fred Akers and got his start in coaching at his alma mater in 1981.After Texas: Koenning landed a job in July 2015 as offensive coordinator at UAB. The Blazers shut down the football program after the 2014 season but reinstated it six months later. They will resume competition in 2017.Jay Norvell, receivers Texas tenure: January 2015 to February 2016. He replaced Koenning on the staff and took over the playcalling after the Longhorns 38-3 loss to Notre Dame to open 2015. But Texas rarely clicked under Norvell. It was shut out at Iowa State last year. A big score for Strong in assembling his initial staff, Rumph held the title of assistant head coach for defense in his lone season at UT. His 2014 line featured consensus All-American Malcom Brown and Hassan Ridgeway as Texas ranked 25th nationally in total defense.Before Texas: He coached the defensive line for three seasons at Alabama. The Tide ranked No. 1 nationally in rushing defense in 2011 and won the national title in 2012. The Alabama stint followed five seasons at Clemson, Rumphs first full-time Power 5 coaching job.After Texas: Two days after signing day in 2015, Rumph left Texas to take over as defensive line coach at Florida, where he remains. His departure caused some hard feelings among Texas signees. Rumph and Florida coach Jim McElwain coached together under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2011.Chris Vaughn, defensive backs Texas tenure: January 2014 to February 2016. Well-liked by his players and a solid recruiter for Strong, Vaughn lost his job early this year as special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach after he was implicated in NCAA misconduct from his time at Ole Miss under Houston Nutt.Before Texas: He spent two seasons at Memphis as cornerbacks coach, preceded by the Ole Miss stint from 2008 to 2011 as safeties coach and seven years at Arkansas under Nutt.After Texas: He was cited for multiple Level 1 violations -- the most severe -- in the NCAAs notice of allegations to Ole Miss, delivered in May. Included in the report was an accusation that Vaughn engaged in fraudulent conduct in connection with the ACT exams for prospective recruits. He remains out of coaching.Shawn Watson, quarterbacks Texas tenure: January 2014 to December 2015. The assistant head coach for offense, Watson called plays in 2014, by all measures a dismal offensive season as Texas finished 110th nationally in yards per game and 107th in yards per play. Tyrone Swoopes struggled at quarterback. Watson retooled the offense after the season, but when the Horns bombed offensively in the 2015 opener at Notre Dame, he was demoted -- much like Bedford this week -- in favor of Norvell.Before Texas: Watson brought an impressive resume to the Longhorns. Notably, he coached quarterbacks and tight ends at Nebraska and served as offensive coordinator under two coaches at the school while helping guide the Cornhuskers through the Big 12-to-Big Ten transition. He left for Louisville in 2011 and tutored Teddy Bridgewater, earning the trust of Strong. Prior to Nebraska, Watson ran the offense at Colorado for Gary Barnett and coached quarterbacks for Barnett at Northwestern. From 1994 to 1996, he was 11-22 as head coach at Southern Illinois.After Texas: Watson landed in March as an offensive quality control coach at Indiana.Joe Wickline, offensive coordinator Texas tenure: January 2014 to December 2015. Wickline coached the offensive line and reputedly assisted in playcalling, which led to a lawsuit with his former employer, Oklahoma State. The suit, settled out of court, involved Wicklines contractual obligation to pay nearly $600,000 of remaining salary unless he left for a position in the NFL or as a college coordinator who called plays. Regardless of the extent of his playcalling responsibility at Texas, not enough of it worked in two losing seasons.Before Texas: A coaching veteran of more than three decades, he spent nine years at Oklahoma State and three at Florida after a series of jobs that included coaching the offensive lines at Baylor and Ole Miss.After Texas: Fired 10 months ago with Watson to make room for the Tulsa duo of Gilbert and Mattox, Wickline landed at West Virginia five weeks later.
