TORONTO -- Both teams thought they deserved more than a point. Neither went home happy. A soft goal and a disputed penalty kick produced a 1-1 tie between Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps, with Jermain Defoes 63rd-minute spot kick rescuing the home side before a sellout crowd of 22,591 at BMO Field on Wednesday night. For Defoe, it was his third goal in two games and 11th in 13 MLS outings. Not enough to make the MLS Fan XI announced before the game but worth a point on the night for Toronto. The home side outshot the visitors 16-11 (6-2 in shots on target) and was pressing as the game ended. "It says a lot about the group when you come in on a night like this and nobodys all that happy with a point," said TFC midfielder Michael Bradley, who was named an MLS all-star. "I think it was important for us to try and get three points tonight," said Defoe. "It didnt happen. We managed to get a point. I suppose thats better than getting no points." He didnt seem all that convinced. Vancouver manager Carl Robinson called it "a very professional away performance" for his side saying there were times that Toronto "couldnt get near us in our possession." "Thats credit to the guys in there (the dressing room)," he said. "But Im disappointed we havent taken three points, I really am." Defoe offered up his respect for the visitors. "I thought they were really good," said the English star. "They were really organized. Credit to them and their manager," he added. "But saying that, you know, towards the end of the second half I thought we would push on and get the winner. But obviously it wasnt meant to be." Vancouver (6-4-8) went ahead on a Darren Mattocks goal in the 50th minute after former Toronto midfielder Matias Laba pounced on a loose touch by Toronto striker Luke Moore near the halfway line. Laba drove forward and two passes later, Canadian Russell Teibert raked a cross across the box that eluded three Toronto defenders before Mattocks tapped it in for his third goal of the season. It was the kind of defensive lapse that Toronto paid for with goals twice before reeling off four goals to beat Houston 4-2 last time out. "(We) conceded a soft goal again," lamented Toronto manager Ryan Nelsen. "I think they only had a couple of shots on target the whole game but one of them went in and that was a soft one when we had numbers around there." Toronto (7-5-4) struck back after Brazilian winger Jackson went down in the box following contact with Nigel Reo-Coker. The English midfielder and Vancouver bench were incensed at referee Allen Chapmans call. Jackson had been a thorn in Vancouvers side all game, artfully attacking down the left flank. But he also went down more than once and one could argue, as the Whitecaps no doubt did, that he initiated contact by running into Reo-Coker after the Brazilian tried to elude another defender. Defoe ignored the furore, calmly beating goalie David Ousted. "Its a tricky one," Robinson said of the penalty call. "What I would say is Ive seen them given, but Ive seen them not given as a free kick. "The thing I think that concerned me was the boy had gone over about 10 or 11 times prior to that. So I dont know whether theyre all free kicks or not and when the boy continues to go over like that, then some youre going to get, some youre not. And obviously fortunately for them, they got that and got the goal back." The home side pressed after pulling even but was unable to secure the go-ahead goal. Substitutes Nick Hagglund and Brazils Gilberto both missed on late headers. The game may prove costly for Toronto, which lost fullback Mark Bloom (knee) and Jackson (hamstring) to injury. Nelsens side is already without captain/centre back Steven Caldwell (quad tear). Toronto, which has lost just once in its last nine games (4-1-4), has now gone 11 straight MLS matches without being held scoreless, a franchise record. Vancouver was coming off a disappointing 3-1 home loss to Chivas USA that saw the Whitecaps give up three straight goals after going ahead. Toronto and Vancouver had split their four previous MLS meetings with the home team winning each time out. Both teams had holes in their backline. For Toronto, Bradley Orr came in for Caldwell. Bradley, who wore the captains armband in place of Caldwell, joins Ronnie OBrien, Jimmy Brennan and Dwayne De Rosario on TFCs all-time all-stars player list. On the Whitecaps side, Canadian teenager Sam Adekugbe came in for suspended fullback Jordan Harvey. Vancouver was also without centre backs Jay DeMerit and Andy OBrien, with Johny Leveron and Carlyle Mitchell starting again. OBrien did make the bench. Kekuta Manneh, Sebastian Fernandez and Gershon Koffie dropped out of Vancouvers starting 11, replaced by Mattocks, Teibert and Reo-Coker. Both teams are in the midst of jam-packed schedules in July. Toronto has seven MLS games plus a high-profile friendly against Tottenham while the Whitecaps have six league matches. The game feature a matchup of marquee central midfields with Pedro Morales and Laba for Vancouver and Bradley and Collen Warner for Toronto. Warner had a whale of a game, swooping back in defence to win the ball and flying upfield to help in the attack. "Best player on the park," Nelsen said of Warner. "He was absolutely fantastic." Defender Doneil Henry also played well for Toronto, controlling Vancouver striker Erik Hurtado with aplomb. The Whitecaps started well, stringing passes together to maintain possession. But that did not translate into scoring chances. Toronto, meanwhile, came close several times on counter-attacks. Toronto heads to Houston next for a rematch with the Dynamo on Saturday while Vancouver plays in Salt Lake City. Cheap Chris Sabo Jersey . On Saturday, the paths of Drew Tate and Kevin Glenn cross again as opposing quarterbacks.PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. - Major League Baseball owners gathered Wednesday for their annual January meeting in the desert with one big item on the agenda — honouring Bud Selig in his final gathering with them as commissioner.About 250 people were expected at a dinner in his honour Wednesday night, held in a huge tent set up on the grounds of The Sanctuary resort on the south slopes of Camelback Mountain. A series of speakers were lined up to praise Selig, who at age 80 will end his 22-plus years in charge of the game when he is succeeded by Rob Manfred on Jan. 25.Among those speaking was former Sen. George Mitchell, who at Seligs request headed the independent investigation into the use by players of performance-enhancing drugs.Seligs daughter, Wendy, also spoke and Hall of Famer Hank Aaron introduced the commissioner.Hes been great for our game in growing the game, said Joe Torre, the longtime player and manager who now works for Selig as executive vice-president of baseball operations, just for his love of the sport and his respect for the sport.New York Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner said there are three main parts to the legacy of Selig, who will become commissioner emeritus. He wasnt a small-market guy, not a big-market guy, Steinbrenner said. He did what he thought was best for baseball. Sometime that went a particular owners way, and sometimes it went against a particular owner.Steinbrenner mentioned two of Seligs major accomplishments.I think the drug policies have come a long way under him, Steinbrenner said. We have one of the best in the business now. And I think another thing youve got to look at is, when you run a company that deals with a union and for 20 years you dont have a work stoppage, thats a significant accomplishment. And I think thats going to be a big part of his legacy, the relattive labour peace that weve had.ddddddddddddSelig walked through the resort from a meeting room on Tuesday but did not stop to talk to reporters.Torre said he was 16 years old when he first met Selig, who owned a car dealership and had provided a car for Torres older brother, Frank, who played at the time for the Milwaukee Braves. Joe Torre said he bought his first car from Seligs company in 1960.Selig became a part-owner of the Braves but sold his interest when the team moved to Atlanta.Probably the toughest time in our relationship was me as a young kid, at 24 and 25, Torre said, when we were moving to Atlanta and had to stay (in Milwaukee) for the 65 season.Selig, Torre said, was bitter and unhappy but through the years maintained a relationship with stars of that team. Then it was no surprise when the (Seattle) Pilots relocated there, because he was determined to do that. The Pilots were awarded to Selig and his investors in bankruptcy court just before the 1970 season and the team was renamed the Brewers.Selig was still the Brewers principal owner when he helped lead the group that forced Commissioner Fay Vincents resignation in 1992. Selig was voted chairman of the executive council, becoming baseballs top official, and repeatedly said he wouldnt become commissioner. When he was elected commissioner in 1998, he transferred control of the team to daughter Wendy Selig-Prieb. Seligs family sold the Brewers to Mark Attanasio in 2005.When Selig first took over MLB, Torre thought hed have an inside track with the boss.My first World Series in 96 we got rained out the first game, so it eliminated the day off, Torre said, recalling when he managed the Yankees against Atlanta. I remember we started on a Sunday and a Monday and then I called him. I said Its not fair we dont get a day off. ... He told me sorry. ' ' '
